More About Us

Founded in 2015 by Robert and Ester, Fika Safaris began with a vision: to make the magic of safaris accessible to everyone, with a special focus on inclusive travel for people with disabilities. Over time, we expanded our focus to create dream safaris for everyone, drawing on our deep knowledge of East Africa’s diverse cultures, wildlife, habitats, and the unique features that make each journey unforgettable. Our insights stem from decades of travelling, living and working across different countries in East Africa, allowing us to offer guests an experience rooted in authenticity and expertise.

As the world and the travel industry evolved—particularly with the growing emphasis on sustainable travel—we took the opportunity to adapt and improve. The global slowdown during the corona pandemic allowed us to pause and rethink our approach, refining our vision to make each safari not only unique but also more personal, socially responsible, and sustainably conscious.

When you book your East Africa safari with Fika Safaris, you can be confident that every detail is carefully handled. From the excitement of planning your dream safari to enjoying the company of experienced, knowledgeable guides, and staying in lodges perfectly suited to your preferences, we’re with you every step of the way. Discover how we craft our safaris, contribute to local projects (via the Fika Foundation), and empower you to explore East Africa sustainably—while creating memories that will last a lifetime.

Sustainable Travel

Sustainable travel has become increasingly vital within the travel industry. While traveling to distant destinations may seem at odds with sustainability, sustainable travel is about much more than simply reducing CO2 emissions. It involves a thoughtful approach to several aspects of your journey, such as supporting local communities, choosing eco-conscious lodges, and respecting both culture and environment.

At Fika Safaris, we offer a CO2 offset option for all of our guests. Should you choose to participate, Fika Safaris will cover 50% of the CO2 emissions for your entire safari, including both vehicle and domestic flight routes.

We prioritize partnering with lodges and hotels that focus on eco-friendly practices, treat their staff well, and actively support their communities. Another way we support sustainability is through Kenya’s Seedball Project, which aims to combat deforestation. All our guests traveling to Kenya receive seedballs containing indigenous tree seeds to plant throughout their journey, allowing them to contribute directly to reforestation efforts.

Other examples of how Fika Safaris contributes to sustainability:

  • Special focus on eco lodges
  • Offering CO2 compensation (inland)
  • Good working conditions for our team
  • Supporting local communities and initiatives
  • Contributing to avoid deforestation in Kenya
  • Avoiding single-use plastic (where possible)
  • 100% solar powered booking office

Our Projects

Throughout our time in East Africa, Fika Safaris has proudly supported a variety of community projects. One of our goals from the beginning was to contribute to initiatives that have a meaningful impact. Over time, we have carefully selected projects that truly benefit from our support.

Ilkerin Primary School – Located in the remote Loita region, this government-run primary school serves over 1,000 children, including those who stay in the school’s boarding facilities due to long travel distances. The school greatly benefits from additional resources to improve its facilities. Working closely with the teachers and board, we’ve built a strong partnership to understand and address the school’s needs. If you’re visiting Kenya and wish to contribute, we can collaborate to create a plan tailored to the school’s needs, whether through reading materials, school supplies, sports equipment, or larger projects.

Homestay in Ilkerin – Recently, we launched a unique homestay experience that directly benefits the Loita community. During your stay, you’ll contribute to the local community and visit various initiatives, including a women’s project, the local dispensary, and Ilkerin Primary School. You’ll also have the chance to explore the beautiful landscape and gain a deep understanding of Maasai life in Loita. Learn more about our homestay experience.

Our Tips For Going On Safari In East Africa

Clothing On Safari
Make sure you pack different layers of clothes. During the day temperatures may vary and wearing different layers make it easy to quickly adapt to weather changes. Pack protective clothing against the sun and mosquitoes. Also don’t forget your swimming clothes and a poncho and/or a raincoat to stay dry during unexpected rain showers.
Vaccination and Malaria in East Africa
Depending on your travel destination, vaccination regulation and advice may vary. We recommend that you be properly informed by the designated travel clinics and/or doctors in your country. Don't wait until the last minute as some of the vaccinations must be given a few months in advance before travelling to your safari destination.
Single Use Plastic
The import of plastic is banned in several countries in East-Africa. When travelling, ensure you don’t carry plastic bags or other disposable plastic items. We fully supports this change and recommend you to bring your own drinking bottle to refill with the water we provide on your safari. If you have any questions about which items are allowed in country of arrival, do not hesitate to ask us!
Tipping on safari
Although not mandatory, tipping is an expression of your gratitude and appreciation for your guide and other staff making your safari more memorable. The guideline for a guide/tour leader is $20 - $25 per day per car. It may seem like a lot, but the guide fulfills multiple roles and makes your safari unique and unforgettable! In hotels and lodges there is often a tip box, this way the tip not only ends up with the staff visible, but also for the housekeeping, security and all other staff who work in the lodges/hotels. The tip can range from $3 to $35 per person per day, depending on your level of satisfaction and travel segment.
